New Mexico

The Bisti Badlands in New Mexico are a place that seems to be out of this world.

Stunning landscapes and stone formations everywhere.
Only problem: It is in the middle of nowhere and you have to hike quite a little bit. There are no marked trails though. A GPS device is highly recommended.

This is the photo taken at Sunrise. It is a much more friendly mood than the other one from the evening before.

The Ship Rock formation in New Mexico is a 1583 ft (482 m) tall remains of an ancient volcano. The elevation at the peak is over 7100 feet above sea level. Leading up to the rock is a long rift along the ground forming what appears to be the ruins of a huge stone wall. Great for hiking and easily accessible to visit. We didn't see any other people when we visited. It is located about 10 miles south of the town of Ship Rock and can be seen from town. There is a highway that passes fairly close with a rough dirt access road to get even closer. The Ship Rock is a sacred Navajo site and I was advised that climbing the rock is no longer permitted.
